Twin Cities Bike Sharing Program Moves Forward

The City of Minneapolis is on track to launch a new bike-sharing program in the spring of 2009. Extremely popular in Paris, Barcelona and Stockholm, the bike sharing program will allow subscribers to pick up and drop off bicycles at locations throughout a large area of Minneapolis and, in later phases, throughout both St. Paul and Minneapolis. Washington County Commissioner-Elect wants out of transit tax

The election has reversed the Washington County Commission's slim 3-2 margin in favor of the 1/4 cent sales tax for transit. Washington County was expected to contribute about $5 million to the pool.

CA Voters Pass High-Speed Rail Measure

The California Secretary of State reports that Proposition 1A: Safe, Reliable High-Speed Train Bond Act has passed with 52.2% of votes in favor. The measure allows California to issue $9.95 billion in bonds to begin construction of an inter-city 220 mph rail system linking the major population centers between Sacramento and San Diego.

Thanks to Congressperson James Oberstar Federal transportation law requires all 50 state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) to employ Pedestrian and Bicycle Coordinators which are intended to advocate the needs of pedestrians and bicyclists in state transportation projects. I'm wondering why a recent job announcement for this position from MnDOT includes management of the I-394 ABC auto parking garages in the Pedestrian and Bicycle Coordinator's job description.
