Columbus, OH passes complete streets resolution

Columbus seeks to provide safe and comfortable streets for all users

COLUMBUS, OH - City of Columbus Council member Mary Ellen O'Shaughnessy was successful in passing a resolution in support of Complete Streets.

The resolution was approved unanimously by the city council and signed by mayor Michael Coleman in Columbus, Ohio on July 29. Read more >

Feds propose raid on transit funds

Will the Feds take money from transit to fund highway projects?

US DOT Secretary Peters wants to transfer money from transit funds to fill an '08 hole in the Highway Trust Fund. The feds had already predicted about a $4 billion shortfall in the Trust Fund by the end of 2009. This is the first deficit in the Fund since it was established 50 years ago. The Highway Trust Fund is funded mostly by the federal gas tax. The deficit accelerates with the reduction in miles driven. Read more >

City of Minneapolis Completes Streetcar Feasibility Study

The City of Minneapolis has evaluated upgrading its Primary Transit Network high frequency local routes from buses to electric powered streetcar lines.

The Streetcar Feasibility Study Final Report was completed and presented to City Council in January 2008. The report recommends a long-term streetcar network made of seven corridors that could be implemented in 20-50 years, depending on funding availability. The report also identifies potential “minimum operating segments” upon which to build the system in a phased approach.
