Smart City Radio had this great segment with John Lewis (Imagine Calgary) and Liesl Wendt (Vision PDX). These folks have taken the visioning process and boiled it down to 4 basic questions. Based off of the Calgary model here are the 4 questions Portland posed to it's residents:

  1. What do you value most about Portland and why?
  2. What changes would you most like to see in Portland right now?
  3. Imagine Portland 20 years in the future and all your hopes for the city have been realized. What is different? How is our city a better place?
  4. As you imagine the Portland you've just described, what are the most important things we can do to get there?

Calgary ended up with 18,000 and Portland with 13,000 participants in this process. This is a new and challenging way to get feedback from the people that live, work, and play in these cities. Give it a listen here and see how they did it and the outcomes.
