Who doesn't love a Block Party? This past summer the smart folks over at Block Party NYC, which is a part of the New York City Streets Renaissance, gave small grants to block parties around New York City. In addition to the grant an urban planner was provided to the block party organizers. The planner did preliminary analysis of the block, attended the block party, did a "block make-over" session, conducted surveys with residents and party participants, and provided a final report about short and long term improvements the block could pursue.

This was a great initiative that combined the coming together of neighbors to hang out on their block for a day. It was also a comfortable space to discuss among themselves and an urban planner the things they love about their blocks and the things that could be improved upon. This is definitely not your planning approach of latter days, but rather a great interactive way to work with communities to address some of the issues they are facing. Check out more photos here.
