Nicollet Avenue Mural
In the early 1970's the City of Minneapolis, in response to continuing blight in the area, created an ambitious "Master Plan" for the intersection of Lake and Nicollet. The City Council allowed K-mart to build on the site. K-mart stipulated that they would only build their model; a big box surrounded by an ocean of car parking. This required the closing of Nicollet Avenue.
The decision to close Nicollet was a desperate one made in less than ideal circumstances. It is time to correct this mistake and restore this part of our city. It is within our reach to do it. This mural painted on the back of the K-mart building depicts the closing of Nicollet Avenue and the building turning its back on the Whittier neighborhood to the north.
