City of Minneapolis Completes Streetcar Feasibility Study

The Streetcar Feasibility Study Final Report was completed and presented to City Council in January 2008. The report recommends a long-term streetcar network made of seven corridors that could be implemented in 20-50 years, depending on funding availability. The report also identifies potential “minimum operating segments” upon which to build the system in a phased approach.

Additional supporting documentation is available under Project Documents>. NEXT STEPS City staff is currently undertaking several critical next steps to further assess the financial feasibility of streetcar implementation and to determine the highest priority corridor segment(s) for initial implementation:
- Further evaluate alternative financing tools and develop a financing strategy for streetcars to determine overall financial feasibility.
- Assess the interest of the development community and affected property owners in financially supporting the construction of streetcar in the minimum operating segments.
- Further evaluate potential maintenance facility sites for each of the identified minimum operating segments.
- Develop guidelines for the design and reconstruction of streets that may have a future streetcar line to ensure that future streetcar operation is not precluded and unnecessary additional costs are not incurred in the future.
